Biography

Mustafa Oral ONCUL borned in Tokat where Middle Anatolia in Turkey in 1967. After his high school education, Prof. Dr. Oral Öncül received his medical education from Gülhane Military Medical Academy (GMMA) Gülhane Medical Faculty In Ankara between 1984 and 1990. After graduating from medical school, he attended Advanced First Aid Course, Chief Medical Officer Orientation Course and Researc Techniques Course. For two years, Malatya II. The Army served as Head of the 400-Bed field hospital. Between1993-1997, he completed his specialty training at GMMA Haydarpaşa Education Hospital, Department of Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology in Istanbul. Dr. Oncul did a thesis named “Penicillin Resistance Rate and Epidemiology in Streptococcus pneumoniae” in this period. He worked as a Clinical Microbiologist and Infectious Diseases Specialist at Ağrı Military Hospital for two years following his specialty training. In 1999, he was appointed Assistant Professor of Infectious Diseases at GMMA Haydarpaşa Education Hospital and started his academic career. In 1999 Marmara Earthquake, he took part in the Turkish Armed Forces Search and Rescue Medical Team. He worked in the first aid and treatment services of many patients traumatized by the earthquake in Gölcük, Adapazarı and Düzce. He worked as Head of Blood Bank of the Turkish Army Force in Istanbul between 1999 and 2001, then he was appointed as Vice of Clinical Chef to Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology Department of Haydarpasa Training Hospital in Istanbul. In 2004, he received the title of Associate Professor at the university, and in 2010 he received the title of Professor at the university. During his term at GMMA Haydarpaşa Education hospital, he served as the Chairman of the Infection Control Committee, Chairman of the Diabetic Foot Board, Chairman of the Febrile Neutropenia and Immunosuppression Board, Chairman of the NBC Board, member of the Transplantation Board and member of the Epidemiology Board. On the other hand, Dr. Oncul served as Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Chairman of the Project Coordination Board and Vice President of the Social Platform of Military Physicians. He was found as an observer in Mayo Clinic on transplantation infections in 2012. He retired from Turkish Army Force as Clonel Medical Doctor in 2014, and was appointed as a member of the Department of infectious diseases and Clinical Microbiology at Istanbul University Istanbul Faculty of Medicine. He worked as a consultant physician for intensive care and transplantation board, hospital infections control committee member and scientific research projects coordinator at Istanbul Faculty of Medicine. One year later, he was appointed as the Vice Dean of Istanbul University Istanbul Faculty of Medicine. He held this position for four years. In 2018, he was appointed as the Chief Physician of Istanbul Medical Faculty Hospital. In 2019, he was appointed as Vice Rector of Istanbul University. Prof. Dr. Mustafa Oral Öncül, who is currently serving as Vice Rector for Research and Projects, has increased the number of projects and researches that have caused the university to rise in international indexes since 2019. He has been involved in the establishment of the University's International Project Office, winning European Union Projects, developing international cooperation and ensuring technology transfer. Prof. Dr. Öncül serves as Vice Rector and as a member of the Board of Directors of Istanbul Teknopark. He took part in technology transfer to the Technopark, the establishment and development of the incubation center, and the development of university-industry collaborations. He made a significant contribution to the success of Technopark companies in terms of national and international commercialization. He also served as the Founding Dean of the Faculty of Nursing established within Istanbul University in 2021. Dr. Öncül is currently serving as a manager, researcher and project manager in many boards and commissions of Istanbul University. He was a member of the American Society of Microbiology (ASM) and European Society of clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID) and a member of the Turkish Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (Klimik) Association's. He served as a member of Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology Education Competence Board between 2011 and 2015. He is a member of the Academic structuring Board of Istanbul University, member of the Animal Ethics Board, the Regulations and Directives Board, the Patent Board, the Scientific Policies Board and member of the Board of European Union Board. In 2017, he was appointed as the member of Republic of Turkey Head of the Development and Support Administration for Small and Medium Enterprises (KOSGEB) of Istanbul University. Dr. Oncul was appointed as the Ethics Committee member of the Republic of Turkey Higher Education Council (YOK) in 2018. He is currently the Permanent Representative of the Istanbul Industrial Development Agency of the Ministry of Industry of the Republic of Turkey. The English and Spanish speaking Prof. Oncul has 12 patent applications, 112 international scientific publications, more than 2000 citation and 20 h indexes. Prof. Oncul, who is currently involved in various national and international projects, has carried out various Istanbul Industrial and Development Agency (ISTKA) projects, Turkey Scientific and Research Council (TÜBITAK) project with a budget of TL 8 million and various international projects as European Union Horizon 2020. Prof. Dr. Oncul is married and has two children.
