Biography

Dr. Poon Wai-kwong has been serving as Contract Professional Consultant for various hospitals on healthcare professional training as well as on hospital quality and safety areas. His expert areas are on emergency, disaster nursing, infection control prevention and hospital quality safety management along with nursing informatics. He did help out for St Teresa’s Hospital as Quality Safety & Administration Manager for ACHS accreditation between 2018 and 2020. He had served as Auxiliary Medical Nursing Officer for Hong Kong Government Flying Services from 2002 until 2023. Alongside, he has also been on and off serving as local undergraduate tutor for foreign universities in Hong Kong since 1996 with great recognition and has been appointed as Adjunct Assistant Professor in The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Faculty of Medicine, Accident and Emergency Medicine Academy Unit since 2005. He was also being appointed as Honorary Professor for School of Nursing, Hong Kong University before. Prior to entering academia, Dr. Poon served in Hong Kong for various Hospitals at Clinical Specialist and Administration Management level. He lasted served as Director of Nursing for Hong Kong Adventist Hospital since 2007 and served as Honorary Nursing Advisor until end of 2015. He is one of the informatics pioneers on promoting Mobility Nursing using PDA and iPad system in private Hospitals. He was in charge and built up a brand new operation theatre level floor; furthermore, he was responsible set up the only private Hospital Minimal Invasive Surgery Training Center there too. Before 2007, Dr. Poon served in Infectious Diseases Control Training Center, Hospital Authority Head Office; and seconded to the newly set up Centre for Health Protection, Infection Control Branch after the SARS era posted as Advanced Practice Nurse (Infection Control). He was responsible for Hospitals and Community Infection Control Training and Institutional outbreak control and management in Hong Kong until he stepped down for Director of Nursing in Private Hospital. By 2007, Dr. Poon achieved his Fellow status on Health Services Executives from both Hong Kong College of Health Services Executives (FCHSE) and Australasian College of Health Service Management (FCHSM). He was also granted Fellow Status for the College of Nursing & Health Care Management (FHKAN (Nursing & Health Care Management)) and College of Community and Public Health Nursing (FHKAN (C&PH –Occupational Health)) under Hong Kong Nursing Academy on May 2012 and May 2014 respectively. He has been serving as the President for College of Nursing & Health Care Management as well as the Council member for Hong Kong Academy of Nursing until Sept., 2024. On 2009, Dr. Poon was appointed and served for The Nursing Council of Hong Kong as Council Member for three years; and he then served as co-op member for Education Committee until 2023. Besides, he has also completed related training and earned his Legal Nurse Consultant title in Hong Kong in 2009 as well. On striving for informatics development in Hong Kong, he was the Council Members for Hong Kong NursInfo since 2005 and now being as the Chairman of the Association since 2012; and served as Council Member for Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS), (Asia Pacific) until 2014 in promoting Healthcare Informatics Management in Asia Pacific Region.
